Chair 811 (also known as model No. 811 ), originally produced by Gebrüder Thonet and now offered by Wiener GTV Design , is a timeless icon of Viennese design, designed in the 1930s by Josef Hoffmann in collaboration with the Thonet company, and represents a masterpiece of balance between craftsmanship, elegance, and functionality .



Design and Style

  • The 811 chair is a perfect example of Central European modernist style, with essential lines and refined details.

  • Its design combines geometric minimalism and natural materials , resulting in a refined, light and versatile design .

  • The curved backrest with woven Vienna straw canvas (natural cannetté) gives it a strong decorative character and breathability.

  • The seat is soft and padded , here covered in light beige bouclé fabric, in contrasting material with the curved wood of the structure.


Materials and Construction

  • Structure : in solid steam-bent beech , one of the historic techniques of the Thonet/GTV brand.

  • Sitting :

    • Version with padded seat (as shown in the photo), also available in wood or woven straw.

    • Polyurethane foam padding covered in fabric or leather.

  • Backrest : natural rattan cannetté canvas, stretched over a shaped wooden frame.

  • Finish : natural wood with transparent varnish (pictured), but available in other shades (black, walnut, lacquered or open-pore stained colours).
