The Tulu chair, designed by Kazuhide Takahama in 1968 and now reissued by Cassina as part of the I Maestri collection. It is an iconic object of Japanese minimalist design reinterpreted with a European twist, combining structural rationality , light lines and refined material elegance .

Design and Style

  • The Tulu is a stackable chair , a perfect synthesis between visual lightness and essential structure .

  • The frame is made of curved metal tubing , with a continuous, geometric design that creates a slim yet distinctive profile.

  • The seat and backrest are padded and upholstered in fabric or leather, and elegantly rest on the frame, almost suspended.

  • In the version pictured: metal frame with a shiny gold finish and anthracite velvet padding, which gives the chair a sophisticated and luxurious tone, perfect for exclusive residential or hospitality contexts.

Materials and Construction

  • Structure : in chromed or painted steel , available in different finishes (black nickel, polished gold, bronze, chrome).

  • Seat and backrest : padded with polyurethane foam and upholstered in selected Cassina fabrics, including wool, velvet or leather.

  • Joints **: welded with maximum precision, ensuring solidity while maintaining lightness.

  • Feet : in transparent, non-slip and scratch-resistant technopolymer.

Approximate dimensions

  • Width : 50 cm

  • Depth : 52 cm

  • Seat height : 45 cm

  • Total height : 77 cm

Compact design, perfect even for small spaces or rooms requiring flexibility (thanks to the stackability).

Distinctive Features

  • Stackability (up to 6 pieces), rarely combined with such an elegant and refined design.

  • Continuous and graphic profile : the structure seems to have been designed with a single fluid gesture.

  • Contrast between the shiny metal structure and the softness of the covering , creating a refined visual balance.

  • Transversal style : suitable for classic, modern and minimalist contexts.

Ideal for…

  • Sophisticated dining tables

  • Conference rooms or formal dining rooms

  • Boutique hotels, lounges, waiting rooms

  • Private or professional environments where aesthetics are as central as functionality

Historical notes

  • Designed in 1968, the Tulu anticipates the minimal design trends of the 70s.

  • Reintroduced by Cassina with updated materials and finishes, it maintains its historical identity but with a new longevity and construction quality.
